Insulat-Off
The 4th grade will be competing in an "Insulat-Off" on April 1, 2011. The students will use what they have learned in class and any extra research they want to do to design and create an insulator using household materials (students are not required to buy any materials). The only limit on materials is it cannot be a pre-made insulator (no lunch box, no thermos, no ice chest, etc.) The insulating materials need to be brought in a leak proof contain (coffee can, sandwich bag, Tupperware, etc.) An ice cube will be placed in the insulator at the beginning of class and we will keep track of how long it takes for the ice cube to melt.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions for this project.

Carnival Auction Basket
The Gleason Carnival is coming up on April 16 and our homeroom class is putting together a basket for the auction. Our basket theme is Memory Lane. We will be collecting items such as note pads, pens, pencils, journals, stationery, stamps, envelopes, scrapbooking supplies, photo albums or money donations. Items can be brought to school until April 8. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Bailey (kathi.bailey@cfisd.net) or me (carla.knight@cfisd.net). Thank you for all of your support!!

New Website
Here is a new website to look at with your family reviewing math, science and English objectives. There is information you can read, activities you can play and quizzes to test your knowledge. But don't do just one, try them all!
In science, you can review sound energy we discussed before Spring Break:
Or in math you can test your memory of fractions:

Daylight Saving Time
I wanted to remind everyone that Daylight Saving Time will occur at 2:00 am Sunday morning (March 13, 2011) so set your clocks one hour ahead before you go to bed Saturday night.
In November we "fall back" an hour on the first Sunday and we "spring forward" the second Sunday in March. However, not everyone observes DST. Countries are continually changing if or when they change their clocks. Currently, there are 80 countries and territories where at least one location observes DST.
Do you know the only two states in the United States who do not observe Daylight Saving Time? Arizona and Hawaii
Weather Tracking
I know a lot of families are traveling over the break but regardless if you are hours away or staying at home for the week, every one can keep track of the weather. You will need to check the forecasts to know whether you can hit the beach in Florida or if you can ski in Colorado. You might need an umbrella in Houston or San Antonio. Here is the website we used in class to track the weather for two weeks:
Look for science all around you during your break. What weather do you experience? What living things do you encounter? What does the moon and stars look like? This is the perfect chance to get first hand experience with what we learn in class. But most of all...
Have a fun, safe Spring Break!!!

We will be taking our Science Benchmark tomorrow morning. Remember to review:
- Parts 1-4 in your Study Guide
- Benchmark Review we did in class
- Do not overlook the vocabulary
I know everyone will do AWESOME!!

Math in the Home
Next time your family buys anything (groceries, clothes, gas, etc.) look at the total price they spent. It should be in decimal form with two numbers after the decimal (hundreths place). Name the decimal and then turn it into a fraction.
If you do this more than once, compare the decimals and determine which price is larger.
